5 May 2005 : New November 5th Design

My design skills have improved a lot (I think) since I designed the first incarnation of my business site over a year and a half ago – a redesign has been long-overdue. And now, it’s here!

The new site launched today. There are a few issues with it that I know about and will be addressing over the coming days, but I’m open to further criticism. =)

Brief To Do List

  • Make main navigation more obvious.
  • Get hover/focus states working on the main navigation in IE.
  • Sort out skip link focus.
  • Fix a couple of broken bits in IE/Mac.
  • Add some more interesting and supportive images.
  • Sort print style sheet.
  • Do something different with the black news links.

Now, back to some proper work. And then maybe a redesign of my blog… finally!

Well done! It looks good: clean and uncluttered.

The hover effects in the main nav may be a bit too subtle, especially for keyboard navigation, but other than that it works very well.

Who decided upon the purple?

The “th” on the favicon is probably lost I had the same issues when playing with it last Friday in Photoshop CS maybe replace it with a dot ”.”

What maybe was of concern is the black hyperlinks on the right-hand navigation.

@ Tommy: I too thought the hover/focus effects on the navigation may be a bit too subtle. I did have something a bit more interesting going on, but guess which browser it wouldn’t work on? Will be changing this next time I’m tweaking the site, which should be soon.

@ Robert Wellock: Knocking up a favicon for me, were ya? Yeah, I figured that it looked empty without the “th”, but stupid with it. Have got a couple of other ideas for a favicon though.

Purple? The background? Before anyone asks, it wasn’t influenced by Jo. It was actually a tint of the main blue I used, but now you mention it, it does look a bit lavender.

I was just curious on how the 5th would look re-sampled and I though bugger and a geometric shape, well too easy…

Even a bearded Guido Fawkes; would look like Tommys old Favicon (that was a really scary image I needed counselling for a week after seeing it) and after all why were I talking fireworks last week when it has nothing to do with the name?

I’m deliberately trying to steer clear of the gunpowder, treason and plot connotations of November 5th. Besides, I’m thinking of changing the business name one day.

Hi Jon

Site is looking good, agree about the nav hover, is a bit too subtle. I’d probably push the blue-grad-boxes on the home page up a bit, they look good & don’t fit on the page at 1024.

Are you still working at Fishergate Centre? I’ve been doing a bit of work myself with other Jon, am there most Thursdays at the moment, would be good to chat!

all the best,
steve

Mornin’ Steve,

I agree with you on the boxes – I think I’ve been too enamoured with my new 19” monitor to notice. I’ve removed the last bit of the intro blurb to give space. It also closes up the nasty white gap under the standards stamp – I was going to place some links in that space later, but will see.

Am still at the Fishergate Centre every now and then checking my mailbox (although they’re not too happy with me down there at the moment). Maybe I’ll pop in on Thursday for a cuppa at chez Irvine.
